Today is 11.1.11 which means everyone should have had an awesome special day. Come on, if you really think about it, you must have at least one good thing happen to you.. am I right? For me, it's my mama's birthday! This fabulous woman is 54 years old yet she looks like she's in her late 30's / early 40's! I'm hoping I got her youngin' genes & that I look as thin & young at that age.. ::fingers crossed::
The family did the usual little celebration with beautiful flowers & some sugary frosted white cake from the local grocery store. Unfortunately, we couldn't really go all out for mama. Brother has a big Math midterm tomorrow & practically the entire family is on some kind of strict food regime, either diet-wise or medically speaking. But we promised mama dukes that very soon we will all go out to a nice fancy restaurant & indulge in some spicy Indian food.

Along with her cake & flowers, she also received a special handmade card by yours truly. I literally called her the day before to ask for her favorite colors.. this is how the conversation went:
Me: Mom! What's your favorite color?
Mom: Why? What are you doing? What are you getting me? It better not be expensive, you're broke & have no money!
Me: *sigh Mom I'm making you a handmade card.. now let's start over. What is your favorite color?
Mom: Oh ok then it's brown.
Me: What's your next favorite color(s)?
Mom: Um... purple... blue... that's it really. But you can do whatever you want I'm sure it'll look nice.
Me: Ok good thanks mama!
Mom: Uh huh.. sure. Now is your brother home from school yet? He hasn't called me back yet..
This is where I came up with the theme colors for the card. I didn't want to use dark brown as the base of the card so I chose kraft cardstock instead. I covered up the front completely with this pretty blue pattern paper & decided to glam it up with glitter, rhinestones, & a sparkling dollie.

The left side border is made up of punched pattern paper, white embossed stamp, baby blue ribbon, & brown sewing thread wrapped around the card 10+ times. I glued & taped the ends of the ribbon & thread on the back of the card. I'll be covering it up with a photo of mom & the kids.

The label is dimensionally adhered on top of the dollie. I stamped the sentiment with brown ink, then outlined it with Sharpie & Gelly Roll pens. The corner of the labels are also stamped & outlined, with little glitter dots stickled on.

I used distress ink on the dollie to give it a vintage look. Then sprayed it down with water mixed with purple pearl pigment to give it extra shine. I topped it off with lavendar rhinestones and blue glitter glue.

The inside is kept simple using the same blue pattern paper with a sentiment stamped in brown ink. I'm going to leave it untouched & use the other side (where the ribbon & thread are) to write a personal message & add my own family photo.
Because we all met up at my parent's place early afternoon, I didn't have time to finish the card & add my personal message/photo. Luckily she doesn't read my blog so she won't know until tomorrow what it looks like.
I included a big list of most of the materials I used for this card below. I hope everyone enjoyed 11.1.11 & if not, you still have another chance next Friday to celebrate 11.11.11!
